Adaptive Path & Aurora
August 13th, 2008
I’ve just been looking at Adaptive Path’s work on the Aurora project and it’s an interesting insight into one possible future of internet interaction. I love the work they’ve done with the design and the interaction, particularly the work around clustering applications which totally makes sense and how they’ve displayed these as more organic sets of boundary shapes rather than formal boxes. However I am slightly overwhelmed by the number of icons surrounding the desktop of the user’s machine. I have enough problems dealing with information overload with the app dock on my mac. I wonder if there’s another way of handling all these?

I’m really feeling J Davey, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Dabrye , Flying Lotus and Waajeed at the moment. Though I’m having real trouble finding somewhere to download the J Davey album within the UK.
See J Dilla? Here’s your legacy..

Seu Jorge AND Public Enemy in one week…
May 24th, 2008
Well this has been a great week for musical inspiration. Seu Jorge at the Royal Festival Hall on 21st and Public Enemy at the Brixton Academy last night. On both occasions we were at the front.
Seu Jorge’s support was the legendary Airto Moreira whose percussion is incredible (no shit sherlock!). He performed what seemed like an improvised piece with shells and a whistle to start. There were some members of the audience who would not shut up through his performance: a particularly annoyingly loud and drunk Brazilian couple 3 rows back from us. Despite all the drumming their chatting was still audible and was making me wriggle in my seat. When I turned around on severaloccasions like the rest of the audience in front of them they were either talking loudly or snogging each other’s faces off. Despite this Moreira had captivated the audience by the time he finished 30 minutes later.
Seu Jorge’s voice is as beautiful as he is (agaian no shit sherlock!). He came out and sang 3 songs with just a guitar: two of which were Bowie covers as featured on the Steve Zissou film. Luckily the drunk couple had seemed to calm down a bit. His band then accompanied him for the rest of performance. Once they were into the swing of playing the new album, America Brazil, the drunk couple had started an autocation with a man in the seat in front of them only to be swiftly ejected from the auditorium by secuity in a very amusing and swift scenario. Aaah justice is sweet when accompanied by a great soundtrack! By the time the band were into the 3rd tune the whole audience was up dancing, it doesn’t take much to get Brazilians dancing but the English were at it as well. They played for over an hour and came back fro an encore of Tive Razao of course. Great night, no return of the drunkards.
Last night was a reunion of sorts for those of us who’ve seen Public Enemy at Brixton 20 years ago except this time there was no Professor Griff and Terminator X has retired but the S1Ws were there, Kool Keith supported then the Shocklee brothers did an amazing set of their own beats as the original bob squad, getting the crowd hyped just before PE arrived. My boyfriend’s not seen them before so he was double excited. I was really hyped and as soon as they came out found myself moshing like the rest but my jeans decided to fall down, damn bad fitting but cheap economy clothing! I had to somehow stop jumping up and down when that is the only way to survive the moshpit and pull my trousers up withput being beaten to the floor. Despite this I enjoyed every minute, apart from the procession of sweaty men that rubbed past me on the way out from the security fence at the front. uck, there was so much sweaty testosterone steaming around me I’m suprised I didn’t come out of there with a beard!
Anyhoo, it was a great night and I have the swollen feet and ringing ears to prove it.

turning 40 in Lisbon
April 29th, 2008
well…
Turning 40 wasn’t as traumatic as I thought it would be despite the fact that I had to bring work with me to Lisbon. After trying several places in Almada on the south side of the river, only finding MacDonalds had wireless which I had to pay for, I decided to trek into Lisbon by boat every day to finish my work. It’s amazing how a bit of light can make your brain function so much faster. Sitting in Mar Adentro near Chiado, I’m feeling relaxed and happy, not tense and desperate as I was before I came to Lisbon.
Lisbon IS truly one of the best cities in Europe and even more so as I lived here before and my Lisbon friends are truly my friends. I miss them when I’m not here terrribly. I’m so happy that a couple of my London friends managed to come out to Lisbon to celebrate with me too. Mo and Matty thank you so much for coming and making the weekend so much fun.
Thank you to Filomena Pinheiro for the most fantastic Shiatsu massage I have ever had. I truly flew to the moon in a trance during it.
Ok, back to working until I have to get on a plane to London tomorrow and back to grey dark skies and my SAD lamp!
