Marcin Nowak
I was born in 1978 in Poland, at present I work and live in London. I have loved drawing and painting from the youngest age. That said, my choice of not studying art was a conscious one, I believe that studying philosophy was more beneficial for my illustrations than taking a university course in visual arts would be.
I had some of my work published in a polish jazz magazine, then, at the university, I was creating illustrations for a students’
magazine. Most of my life I was working almost exclusively with ink, only recently starting to explore the world of colour. I undertook new
direction of work encouraged to do so by my tutor at the London College of Communication, where I studied illustration.
My major inspiration was always the polish poster school, this is the source of surreal elements in my works. This is where the idea of an
illustration or a painting being a task rather for a viewer, then plain commentary of a text it accompanies, comes from.
